The Diabetes UK Hull and East Yorkshire group is one of over 350 voluntary groups situated throughout the UK.
Our main objective is to provide support for children with Diabetes and their carers.
Support comes in many forms. Possibly the best form is simply meeting others with the same condition and finding out you are not on your own. Many families feel isolated and uncertain about the future but meeting other families who have all experienced what you are going thriugh can really help.
We have found by experience that you cannot simply sit children roumd a table and expect them to support each other. Support for children has to be subtly provided, which is why so much of our time is spent setting up events and activitiesfor them. For a child, sometimes just seeing another child test their blood or do an injection is enough to help them realise that they are not alone. Throughout the year we organise activities, trips and even a family weekend away with information and activities for all.
Many of our awareness and fundraising events are centred around the children and we always encourage them to take part. While raising awareness or funds, they are also making friends with other children with Diabetes and are able to share their feelings with people in a similar situation rather than just adults or NHS staff.
We encourage those interested to attend our group meetings which are a welcoming and social environment for people to discuss Diabetes and its effects. Support and companionship are some of the simplest yet most important aspects of living with Diabetes - this is why our group exists and we want to help in any way that we can.
Children are welcome at all meetings and are positively encouraged to come along. Brothers, Sisters, Family Members and friends are also welcome at any meeting or event.
Any child living in the area under the age of 21 is eligible and new members are always welcomed. There is no charge for membership and most of our events are subsidised or even free. If you want to find out what we do, simply come along to the next meeting and see what you're missing.
